Police are investigating an aggravated robbery on Thursday night in Invercargill where a member of the public was stabbed.

A man entered the Gladstone Night 'n Day at around 9:20pm holding what appeared to be a firearm and demanded money from a shop assistant.

A member of the public intervened before being stabbed by a second offender.

The two offenders then fled in a stolen red Honda Civic.

A witness told Stuff he saw a father comforting his crying daughter who was working in the store at the time of the robbery.

The witness said he also saw medics taking a man on a stretcher out of the store who "didn't look too well".

The victim is now in a stable condition in hospital.

Police are asking for the public's help to identify the two offenders. Both offenders wore black sweatshirts, one with 'Ford' branding and one with 'LA' written on it.
