Police are searching for a person who rammed a speed camera vehicle and a police car in the Bay of Plenty.

A police spokesperson told Newshub that on Saturday morning the person, driving a silver Ford Ranger ute, intentionally rammed a speed camera car parked on Daniel St, near Kaingaroa Forest.

The person inside the car was not injured and immediately called for backup.

When police tried to pull over the fleeing vehicle, the driver stopped before attempting to ram the police car.

A brief chase ensued but officers were forced to abandon it less than a minute later, as the ute was driving too dangerously.

The driver of the ute tried to ram police for a third time as it escaped, so officers deployed a helicopter. But the helicopter found nothing but the empty vehicle.

Officers are continuing to make inquiries and locate the ute's driver, and ask anyone with information to call police on 105.
