Series of small earthquakes rattle upper North Island overnight

 

Auckland, the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have been rattled by a series of small earthquakes on Monday morning after a weekend of quakes. 

A number of shallow earthquakes have struck off the coast of the Bay of Plenty overnight and into the morning. 

People rated the earthquakes as 'light' and 'weak' on Geonet. The latest magnitude 2.5 earthquake hit offshore, 115 km north-west of Te Kaha at 7am. It was classified as 'unnoticeable" by Geonet however a handle of Aucklanders reported feeling 'weak' shaking. 

Most of this morning's quakes were shallow with a magnitude of between 2.5 and 3. 

The earthquakes follow a weekend of activity for the North Island with thousands of people reporting feeling a shallow 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Auckland, the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning. 

The 5km deep quake struck at 3.47am and was located offshore, 120km north-west of Te Kaha.

The quake was classed as 'weak' on the GeoNet site but more than 2500 people reported feeling it.
