Two people have been taken to hospital following a large blaze in Southland.

Nine fire crews including tankers were called to the Mossburn Diner on Devon St, just before 8pm on Friday.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Ian Littlejohn says it was up in flames when crews arrived.

"We received multiple calls to a building on fire in Mossburn. Various crews from around the district attended, and two were transported to people with smoke inhalation."

In a post on social media, the Mossburn Volunteer Fire Brigade said it was a sad night for the community.
