Two people have been charged in relation to the murder of Southland man Dale Watene, who was found dead in a forest in May after going missing for more than a month.

Police say a 30-year-old woman has been charged with murder and a 23-year-old man with accessory after the fact to murder. They are due to appear in Invercargill District Court on Tuesday.

Police say they aren't looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

"Police would like to thank the Otautau community for their support and assistance over the last four months," Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Harvey says.

"Mr Watene's family have been advised of the latest development and they wish to thank Southland Police for the investigation."

Police initially reported Watene, 40, as missing from the Otautau area in April after he hadn't been seen for a week.

A body was found on May 21 in the Longwood Forestry block, west of Invercargill, and a post mortem was carried out the following day where it was determined it was Watene.
