A convicted murderer is on the run in Auckland after escaping custody during a visit to the hospital.

Katrina Epiha, 22, was jailed last year after stabbing a Christchurch woman to death at a party in 2017.

Epiha escaped custody while being returned to Auckland Regional Women's Corrections Facility early on Friday.

Police say she was last seen at 12:30am running towards Gray Avenue in Mangere after fleeing from Middlemore Hospital.

"Katrina has large distinctive tattoos on both sides of her face. She was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved top with a white shirt underneath, grey track pants and light pink running shoes," police say.

She is considered dangerous and should not be approached, police say.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts or possible sightings is urged to call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1321.
