Coronavirus: Locations, ages, ethnicities of New Zealand's 116 active COVID-19 cases

As Auckland's first weekend at alert level 2.5 nears its end and the rest of New Zealand remains at level 2, the country's current active COVID-19 cases sits at 116.

Five new cases were announced on Sunday - four in the community and one imported. This brings the country's total confirmed and probable cases to 1772, of which 1421 are confirmed.

No further deaths were recorded on Sunday, keeping the total at 24.

Of the current active cases, 39 are imported and 77 are community. A total of 159 cases have been connected to the Auckland August cluster, with 76 still active.

Locations

Data from the Ministry of Health shows that of the 116 active cases, 23 are in the Auckland DHB, 27 in Counties Manukau, 1 in Waikato, 26 in Waitematā, and 39 in managed isolation and quarantine facilities.

When cases are detected in the community, arrangements are made to have the people moved to a quarantine facility where possible. This is intended to stop the virus flowing on to other people in the individuals' household. Family members can also move into these facilities.

As of Sunday, 75 people linked to Auckland's cluster are in the quarantine facility. This includes 58 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. Others may be in hospital or specific bespoke arrangements set up for their needs and with tight security.

Four people are in hospital with COVID-19. There are two in North Shore Hospital's general ward, one is in a general ward at Middlemore Hospital and one is in ICU in Waikato Hospital.

Ages

There are 34 active cases among people younger than 20, with 16 between those aged 0 to 9, and 18 between 10 to 19. Twenty-four cases are people in their 20. There are 26 active cases in the 30 to 39 age bracket - currently the highest number in an age group. Twelve cases are in their forties and 14 are in their fifties

There are just three cases in those aged between 60 and 69, two between 70 and 79 and a single case aged between 80 and 89.

The Ministry of Health provides a breakdown of the ages of all Auckland August cluster cases, including those no longer considered active.

Current active cases:

  • 0 to 9 - 16
  • 10 to 19 - 18
  • 20 to 29 - 24
  • 30 to 39 - 26
  • 40 to 49 - 12
  • 50 to 59 - 14
  • 60 to 69 - 3
  • 70 to 79 - 2
  • 80 to 89 - 1

Ethnicities

Of all New Zealand's recorded COVID-19 cases, 1091 (62 percent) are European or Other, 277 (16 percent) are Asian, 175 (10 percent) are Pacific Peoples, 169 (10 percent) are Māori 52 (3 percent) are Middle Eastern/Latin American/African and the rest are unknown.

In the Auckland August cluster, the ethnicity breakdown shows the significant impact the virus has had within Māori and Pasific communities. Pacific Peoples make up 98 cases (62 percent), Māori account for 34 (21 percent), and Other is 27 cases (17 percent).

"Prioritised ethnicity classification is used for reporting purposes," the Ministry of Health says.

"Each case is allocated to a single ethnic group based on the ethnic groups they have identified with, which are, in order of priority: Māori, Pacific Peoples, Asian, MELAA (Middle Eastern / Latin American / African) and European/Other. This means that if a person identifies as being Māori and New Zealand European, the person is counted as Māori."
