Coronavirus: Managed Isolation cracks down on mask-wearing after video emerges of returnee speaking over a fence without covering

Officials say they will be reminding a returnee about mask-wearing rules after they were filmed outside a managed isolation facility talking to members of the public over a fence, with their face covering around their chin.

The returnee was filmed in the courtyard of the M Social Auckland managed isolation facility on Thursday.

Rules state those who have returned from overseas and are in managed isolation facilities must wear face coverings when outside their rooms.

But a video supplied to Newshub shows one returnee with their mask around their chin, at the same time as talking to members of the public over the facility's courtyard fence.

"I think this stuff should not be happening under any circumstances," said the person who supplied the video.

A Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) spokesperson told Newshub officials were asking for "personal responsibility" from returnees about mask-wearing.

Returnees are advised about personal protective equipment (PPE) use if it's seen being used incorrectly, the spokesperson said.

"Since becoming aware of this footage, staff on-site will remind the returnee how to correctly use PPE," said the spokesperson.

They added people inside MIQ facilities are allowed to speak with members of the public through fences, as long as they wear face coverings correctly and maintain 2m social distancing.

There were four new cases of COVID-19 announced on Thursday - two of which were in managed isolation.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins said the two cases in the community were linked to the Mt Roskill Evangelical church.

There are three people in the hospital, Hipkins said, two of whom are in intensive care.
