Coronavirus: One new case of COVID-19 reported on Saturday, plus another historical case

The Ministry of Health reported one new case of COVID-19 on Saturday, and another historical case.

The new case was picked up at a managed isolation facility. There are no new cases in the community.

The virus was found in a man in his 30s who arrived from Russia, via UAE, on September 21. The infection was picked up during a day three test, and he is now in quarantine.

The historical case relates to a person who was aboard a recent flight from Christchurch to Auckland, where a positive case was picked up earlier this month.

"They had returned negative day three and day 12 results in managed isolation," the ministry said. They were retested and the historic infection picked up - though it's not believed to be linked to the Christchurch group, the ministry saying "any infection would have occurred overseas prior to the person returning to New Zealand earlier this month and they are no longer infectious".

"As we have previously said about historical cases, we know that some people can return a positive PCR test long after they have recovered from the illness and are no longer infectious.

"As a further update on this flight, all passengers have now been tested, except one - a young child.

"Aside from the previously reported three cases and today's historical case, all results have been negative, with one pending."

There are presently 32 people in the Auckland quarantine facility, including 15 people who have tested positive and their close household contacts. Two people are in hospital - one in Auckland City, the other at Middlemore. Neither are in ICU.

The total number of cases is now 1475.
