Gisbourne teen makes colouring books to raise money for cystic fibrosis sufferer Bella Powell

A Gisborne teenager has raised thousands of dollars for cystic fibrosis sufferer Bella Powell by making and selling her own colouring books.

Bella Powell lives with cystic fibrosis and takes a non-funded 'miracle drug' Trikafta, which comes at a cost of $469,000 per year.

When Nina Buscke heard Bella's story, she decided to create a colouring book 'Colours for Bella' in effort to fundraise for the drug.

Nina started designing drawings on her iPad, then sent pictures to a book-making company for printing.

The 14-year-old has printed 1000 copies and has made nearly $6000 - with all proceeds going to Bella.

Nina told The Project on Monday that she started fundraising after hearing about Bella's plight on the news.

"I just wanted to do it for her because I felt like she deserved it," she told The Project.

"I felt that the drug was really overpriced and that the New Zealand Government didn't fund it, so I thought that I would help her."

"It's something creative and different and I like to draw so I hopped onto my iPad and I did some drawings and we made them into a book."

Bella got in touch with Nina on Instagram to tell her how grateful she was.

"It was amazing," Nina said.

People can order the colouring books online from www.theworkshopgizzy.com or from The Workshop in Gisborne.

Nina has also set up an Instagram page (colours_for_Bella).
