As it happened: Jacinda Ardern, Dr Ashley Bloomfield announce COVID-19 alert level decision

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield are announcing the latest decision on New Zealand's COVID alert levels.

At the moment the country - except for Auckland - is at alert level 2. Auckland is at alert level 2.5 where gatherings are restricted to 10 people.

Both of these are being reviewed, with Ardern saying last week it had been agreed in principle for everywhere but Auckland to move to level 1 from midnight tonight. Auckland would remain at level 2 with a view to increase the size of gatherings.

New Zealand's leading COVID-19 modelling expert thinks it's safe for the country to move down coronavirus alert levels, University of Auckland Professor Shaun Hendy telling The AM Show "things are looking under control".

All eyes are now on the Prime Minister and Director-General of Health as they reveal their decision. Ardern and Dr Bloomfield are due to speak at 1pm.
