An inmate has died at Manawatu Prison, but his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police and an ambulance were at the scene following the incident on Sunday afternoon, Manawatu Prison director Mark Cookson said.

"[The Ministry of] Corrections can confirm that a prisoner at Manawatu Prison died on Sunday 6 September," he said.

"Police have attended and will notify next of kin. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Prisoners and staff affected by the man's death will be provided with support."

He added all deaths in custody are referred to the Coroner for investigation and to determine the cause of death. There will also be an investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate.

No further details could be provided since the death remains subject to investigation.
