Police investigating video of man smoking weed while driving on Auckland motorway

An Auckland man who posted a video of himself seemingly smoking weed while driving on a motorway has caught the interest of police.

The unknown man posted the footage on web forum Reddit on Thursday, showing a confrontation between him and another driver - who he refers to as "Karen".

In the video the man has a brief and bizarre shouted conversation with the female driver which, as he explains in the comments, came about because he was driving stoned and passed her because he felt she was driving too slowly.

He says the woman flicked her lights and shouted, so he started filming.

In the video the woman shouts about her recent sale of a contract which left her $5 million richer, and the man shouts back that she should have bought a better car with it.

The camera then pans back to the busy motorway and the driver's hand - in which a large lit joint is clasped.

Snr Sgt Bill Russell of the Waitemata police told Newshub his behaviour was "extremely dangerous".

"The behaviour in this video shows a driver who appears to be smoking cannabis while driving and using his phone. He is also distracted while trying to talk to another motorist."

Russell says cannabis use has been a factor in "a number" of serious and fatal crashes in the past.

"The other behaviours, including using your phone and not focusing on the road ahead could also cause a crash."

On top of the cannabis use, the video was shot on Auckland's Northern Motorway, which is currently under "immense congestion" due to damage on the Harbour Bridge.

"We really need everyone to focus while on the road as even a minor crash will cause further delays to motorists trying to go about their business," said Russell.

He says police will be investigating the video, asking anyone with more information to contact them on 105.

Comments on the man's post condemn his actions too, calling him a "fool" for driving under the influence.

"Don't drive baked. And especially don't drive high and while using your phone. F**k, man. That's so shitty," wrote one user.

"So this guy is driving under the influence, paying absolutely no attention to the road, and escalating a situation that puts countless others at risk, so he can film a lady he claims is a Karen," said another.
