'Sharp' magnitude 3.7 earthquake strikes near Wellington

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake has struck near Wellington on Saturday night, setting off over 1600 felt reports.

The quake hit at a depth of 22 kilometres around 25km southwest of Wellington just after 8:30pm.

According to the GeoNet website, nine people felt it as 'strong', 59 felt it as 'moderate' and 543 felt it as 'light'.

"Sharp jolt in Aro Valley," one person commented on Twitter.

"Felt that in Welly (near the beach & Cook Strait). A couple of sudden jolts," another said.
