A shallow earthquake has struck just outside Wellington causing "a bang and several jolts".

The 3.5 magnitude quake hit 10km south of Lower Hutt at a depth of 4km, shortly after 5:30pm on Thursday.

Geonet reports more than 2000 people felt the shaking, with 131 reporting "moderate" shaking.

Twitter quickly lit up with people reporting they heard it stronger than they felt it.

"That was loud but not much wobble" wrote one man.

The quake was felt as far as Palmerston North.
