Family members of a dead baby boy in south Auckland are being urged to speak up as a small group of whānau choose not to cooperate, police say.

The 10-month-old from Manurewa died in hospital earlier this month as a result of non-accidental head injuries.

A homicide investigation was subsequently launched.

In a statement on Tuesday, Det Snr Sgt Kevin Tiernan says some of the baby's whānau have been cooperating but a small group is refusing to.

He says this is disappointing and urges anyone who is approached about the homicide investigation to consider talking to them.

"Anyone who would like to speak with police can contact the investigation team on (09) 261 1321, police on 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
