Weather: Strong winds cause truck to roll on busy Wellington motorway

A truck rolling on State Highway 1 north of Wellington has caused significant traffic delays with two motorway lanes blocked.

The incident occurred at 3:05pm between Tyers Rd and the Newlands on-ramp on Monday after high winds rocked the area.

A video NZTA posted to Twitter shows the truck lying on its side across one lane of the motorway and the on-ramp.

NZTA said while the road and truck has been cleared, drivers should still expect "significant delays".

"There are significant delays if heading north on SH1 or southbound on SH2 from Petone due to Hutt Rd congestion," it said on Twitter.

"Please be patient during evening peak while congestion eases."

The northbound motorway lanes were blocked from when the incident occurred until 3:25pm, when two lanes were opened. This caused traffic to back up down SH1 to the Urban Motorway.

MetService issued a strong wind warning for Wellington and the Wairarapa on Monday, saying there could be severe gale northwesterlies in exposed places with gusts reaching 120km/h.

"Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles," it said on its website.

The warning is currently in place until 7pm.

Locals may also experience possible hail and thunderstorms before the weather clears in the evening.

Severe weather has disrupted transport across New Zealand as an Antarctic blast hits the country.

Several flights in and out of Queenstown and Invercargill were cancelled as snow covered parts of the South Island, and motorists were told to avoid some roads for fears of black ice and heavy snow.
