Emergency services are responding to a fire inside a high rise building in Auckland central.

The Tower Centre building on Fanshawe Street is reportedly filled with smoke and fire trucks have been hosing the building's interior.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency said they were alerted to the fire at 8:20am on Monday.

They said eight crews attended the fire, which originated on the first floor of the 12 storey building.

As of 9:45am, the fire is under control and some of the trucks are leaving the scene.

Auckland Transport said motorists need to be prepared for delays. The incident has closed a section on Fanshawe Street between Albert Street and Hobson Street.

A Police spokesperson said they are assisting with traffic management with cordons in place which are expected to be lifted shortly.
