The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a property in Northland after a police officer was allegedly shot at on Tuesday morning.

Images published by Stuff showed multiple police vehicles near Matauri Bay, north of Kerikeri and State Highway 11 - where the shooting took place.

Police said on Tuesday afternoon it was called to the area after a "kidnapping incident" was reported at 8am when the male victim approached a Matauri Bay property asking for help.

"Thankfully this man has not sustained serious injuries during the incident and he is speaking with us to ascertain a full set of circumstances," police said.

"The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed to the Matauri Bay area as a precaution given the seriousness with which police are treating these matters."

Police said it has found a vehicle of interest in this inquiry - a grey 2010 Nissan Skyline with the registration MWD839 that was set alight at about 4:50am on Tuesday morning.

It added it is still unknown whether the vehicle used in the kidnapping is the same vehicle in the SH11 incident, but police believes it is a silver or grey sedan.

Police on Tuesday morning released a statement saying that around 4:13am a car pulled out in front a police vehicle and stopped in the middle of the road on SH11 near the Puketona Junction with State Highway 10.

"Before the officer could get out of the patrol car, two males have exited their vehicle and have both presented firearms. The officer has immediately retreated but one shot was fired at the vehicle which has damaged the windscreen," the statement said.

The officer was not harmed and quickly left the scene to call for backup.

An investigation is still underway to find the men and vehicle.
