An assault on a young Auckland man during broad daylight in Auckland left him beaten to "near-death".

Police said it received several calls at around 3:20pm on Sunday to incidents in Grey Lynn involving "multiple youths".

"This included an incident in which a male was assaulted," a police spokesperson said.

The man was attacked and beaten near the restaurant Tiger Burger on Great North Rd.

There were no apparent weapons, police added, and an ambulance was called to the scene to attend to the victim.

"Police caught up with 10 youths, but at this stage, no charges have been laid."

It is understood the group of youths were playing in the traffic before the incident occurred and is believed to be an unprovoked attack.

A local resident says it was initiated by a group of people believed to be aged around 15 years old who are strong in build. They were also allegedly wearing "club colours".
