A Christchurch child had to be rushed to hospital after being struck by a car in a suspected hit-and-run, police say.

Emergency services received a report of a crash between a car and scooter on Hay St, in the eastern suburb of Bromley, at about 3:20pm on Thursday.

Police understand when the child was hit, the vehicle "decamped from the scene".

"One person was transported to hospital by ambulance," a police spokesperson said. "The car involved has not yet been located."

The spokesperson added police didn't have any information on the cause of the crash or what precisely occured, and enquiries are ongoing.

A person who said they witnessed the incident wrote on Facebook that "two males" in a "silver coloured Subaru station wagon with a smashed in rear hatch" hit the person.

"They just hit and run a 10-year-old boy on a scooter at the corner of Hay Street and McGregors Road," they said.

"The car swerved on the wrong side of the road to overtake a bus on Hay Street then turned in front of the bus onto McGregors Road striking the kid who was waiting for the car."

Newshub has contacted the witness for further information.

A St John spokesperson told Stuff an ambulance took one person in a moderate condition to Christchurch Hospital.
