Coronavirus: Five new COVID-19 cases in New Zealand, none in community

Five new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in New Zealand in the last 24 hours - none of which are in the community.

Each of the cases is in a managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facility, the Ministry of Health revealed in a press release on Monday afternoon.

Three of them of are mariners staying at the Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport. They were tested on day nine of their 14-day isolation period as they were part of the group who had previously been in close contact with other confirmed cases.

These three are now in Christchurch's quarantine facility, alongside 29 other mariners who tested positive last week.

The fourth case was a recent returnee who'd travelled to New Zealand from Ethiopia, via Dubai. They tested positive in an Auckland hotel after routine testing around day three of their stay.

The final case was a person who was already staying at the Jet Park Hotel, Auckland's quarantine facility, as they're a family member of a returnee who'd recently tested positive.

The total number of confirmed and probable cases in New Zealand has now climbed to 1940. Of these, 74 are active - 70 in MIQ and four in the community.

The Ministry of Health has also released preliminary results of the genome sequencing for two Auckland cases linked to a marine engineer who returned a positive test result after working on the Sofrana Surville.

"The genome sequencing shows the three workers all have an identical form of the virus - further evidence their infections are from a common source," a spokesperson said.

"Australian authorities are doing genome sequencing on the three crew members of the Sofrana Surville who tested positive on arrival in Brisbane after leaving New Zealand. Those results are pending."
