Earthquake strikes outside Levin, shaking Wellington

Wellington has been rattled by a 4.6 magnitude quake striking at 30km deep.

The quake struck just after 2pm on Saturday with more than 3000 people reporting they felt it within minutes.

Hitting 30km north-west of Levin the earthquake rattled the city, with 260 people describing the shaking as "moderate".

The majority of reports describe the shaking as "weak".

The 4.6 quake follows two weaker ones earlier on Saturday - a 3.1 hit 10km south of Lower Hutt just after noon, swiftly followed by a 2.4.
