Man found guilty of physical, sexual violence against former partner

A man on trial for serious physical and sexual violence against his former partner of seven months, has been found guilty of all charges.  

The man, who is in his twenties, faced two charges of sexual violation by forcing the woman to perform sexual acts on him, three charges of assault including holding her in a chokehold, two charges of assaulting the woman with a knife, and one charge of threatening to kill her.  

Justice Brewer delivered his verdict in the High Court at Auckland on Friday morning, after a three day judge alone trial, that began on Monday. 

During the course of the trial, the woman described her seven month relationship with the man as "volatile", "scary", and "manipulative", saying he "ate away at her spirit" and that she felt "worthless". 

But the man, who has name suppression, maintained he did not physically or sexually harm the woman.

His lawyer, Belinda Sellars QC, described the relationship between the pair as "difficult" but not violent. 

However Justice Brewer has found the man guilty of all eight charges, and he will be sentenced next month.
