Otago University students have been cleaning up the streets of North Dunedin in memory of Sophia Crestani who died at a flat party a year ago.

Students armed with bags and brooms hit Castle Street cleaning up broken glass, rubbish, and old furniture.

The event was organised by friends of the second-year student. Crestani was killed in a stairway pile-up during a crowded party last October.

Otago University student Emily Jenner says The Sophia Charter, launched by Crestani's parents, gives them a great reason to come together for a good cause.

The Charter is designed to enhance the safety and wellbeing of Dunedin students.

It's a shared commitment from Dunedin stakeholders, including the university, police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Otago Property Investors Association, the Dunedin City Council and the Otago University Students' Association.

"It gives us a great chase to come together as a community, make a difference and ensure the same thing doesn't happen to another student," said Jenner.

Jenner believes attitudes are changing in the student quarter with young people keen to work together to look after the area and each other.
