Police will reinvestigate the death of a Gore toddler following claims from the child's father that foul play might have been involved.

Lachlan Jones was three years old when his body was discovered in a sewage oxidation pond. His death in 2019 shocked the country and led to charges being laid against the Gore District Council under the Health and Safety of Work Act.

Police ruled it as death by drowning - but the boy's father says otherwise.

Paul Jones, told Otago Daily Times he feels police let down his son and the investigation into his death was not thorough enough.

"This is a little boy who's supposed to have run 1.2km to somewhere he's never been before, barefoot across gravel and through nettles, climbed a gate or barbed wire, and got into a pond," he told the ODT.

"I believe he was carried there by someone."

A police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub that they will review the case, saying any matters which arise from it will be "considered and addressed".

The review is expected to be completed next month.
