Wellington has been rattled by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake.

The quake hit 75km south east of Seddon on Wednesday afternoon at a depth of 31km, according to Geonet.

More than 1600 people reported feeling shaking, with most saying it was mild or moderate.

One person has reported the shaking as "extreme".

It's the third earthquake felt in the capital in four days. On October 24 three quakes measuring 4.6, 3.1 and 2.4 respectively caused a rumble in the city.
