Aucklanders awake to lockdown déjà vu as workers told to stay away from central city

Aucklanders could be waking up with lockdown déjà vu after health officials warned people to stay away from the central city following the announcement of a new case of COVID-19 in the community.

The case was revealed on Thursday afternoon, and by Thursday evening officials were warning Aucklanders to work from home on Friday where possible.

In response to this advice Auckland City Council will close a number of its central city venues on Friday. Three offices on Albert St, Graham St and Bledisloe House will shut their doors, as will the Auckland Central City Library, the Town Hall, the Tepid Baths and Waitemata Local Board office.

Venues on the fringe of the city centre, including Studio One, the Parnell Community Centre, Ponsonby Community Centre and Freeman's Bay Community Centre will remain open.

Director of Public Health Caroline McElnay said anyone employed in downtown Auckland should stay home.

"Minimising movement in the CBD is currently the best precautionary measure we can take."

She described the recommendation as "an abundance of caution".

The latest case, a woman in her 20s, developed symptoms on Monday, November 8. She was tested on Tuesday and attempted to call in sick, but after a conversation with her boss, went to work in a customer facing role.

She worked at A-Z Collective, a clothing store on Auckland's High St on Wednesday before she tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
