Earthquake shakes Christchurch

A moderate earthquake has shaken Christchurch.

The 4.5 magnitude quake hit 20km south-west of Christchurch about 7:26 am on Friday morning. 

More than 7000 people reported feeling the quake, some as far south as Gore.

"Was that a quake or did America call the election winner?" Newshub reporter Juliet Speedy tweeted."

"Thought it was under my bed!!! Gave me a huge fright. Loud and rumbly," a person Tweeted.

"My anxiety over the last few days has been high enough. This didn't help!" Another added.

Wellingtonians also reported feeling the quake.
