A homicide investigation has been launched by Auckland police after a body was discovered in a burning car.

Emergency services initially received a report that a vehicle was on fire on Alfriston Road, in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa, at around 3am on Wednesday.

In a statement, Detective Inspector Chris Barry said Fire and Emergency (FENZ) attended and extinguished the blaze. The body was subsequently discovered in the burnt-out vehicle.

Counties Manukau Police are currently speaking with a man in relation to the alleged homicide.

"He is assisting us with enquiries," Det Insp Barry said.

Diversions are in place from the intersection of Alfriston Road and Mill Road along to the intersection of Brookby Road and Alfriston-Ardmore Road.

"We thank our community for their patience and understanding as we deal with this incident," he said.

A number of enquiries are now underway to identify the deceased and to determine the circumstances of the death.

"Our priority is to identify the deceased and locate their next of kin. We are not in a position to provide further details at this time but will look to provide an update this afternoon."
