Kiwi political commentator drinks tequila shot with bug in it to honour pre-election promise

A New Zealand political commentator has swallowed more than just her words by keeping a promise she made to eat a bug on live television.

On Wednesday Josie Pagani promised she would eat a bug if Joe Biden won the 2020 US election - and on Sunday, he did.

Pagani appeared on The AM Show on Monday, and made good on her promise.

She told host Duncan Garner she had considered eating a gummy worm as a way to side-step her promise, but realised she probably couldn't get away with it.

She also looked into getting a chocolate-covered locust delivered by speciality company Eat Crawlers - but they couldn't deliver it in time, leaving her with only one option.

"Unfortunately I rummaged around in the gardens of Queenstown and I managed to find this disgusting, big fat ant," she said while holding it up to the camera.

Even more unfortunately, as she spoke to Garner, Pagani realised the ant's leg was still moving.

"Oh my god - it's still alive!"

But not for long - as a way around just eating the ant, Pagani dropped it into a shot of tequila - a bold choice given that it was just 7:20am.

"I hope to God it drowns," she said.

True to her word, she knocked back the shot and the unlucky bug with it.

"God bless the 46th President of the United States and God bless the United States of America!"

Pagani wasn't the only person making good on their election bets on Monday. Republican Party strategist John Jordan had previously promised he would make an appearance on The AM Show in a Borat-style mankini if Donald Trump lost.

On Monday Jordan went one better - appearing naked except for a tie.

"I can assure you I'm not wearing a stitch of clothing other than this tie to hold up my microphone," he said.

Luckily for Jordan and the viewers, the interview was shot from the chest up.
