The Ministry of Health says they have come up with a fix after some Chinese-made phones were unable to use New Zealand's COVID Tracer app.

Kiwis spoke out about the issues on Reddit and in Google Play reviews, saying they couldn't scan QR codes, although they could still add manual diary entries.

"I'm on a OnePlus 7 Pro and haven't been able to scan QR codes in over a month," one person commented.

"I've had the same problem with my Xiaomi phone as well," another said.

Chris Hipkins, the Minister for COVID-19 Response, told reporters during Friday's press conference it was "the first time anyone's raised that issue with me".

The Ministry of Health later confirmed the issue was contained to a small number of Kiwis with OnePlus, Redmi, Oppo and Xiaomi phones.

It was the result of the latest NZ COVID Tracer release for Android.

"A fix for the problem was immediately developed," a spokesperson told Newshub.

"Anyone experiencing the problem should not hesitate to get in touch with the support team at help@covidtracer.min.health.nz. Affected users will be invited to update their app to a special version that works on their device. All other features also function normally in this version of the app."

They said the issue will be permanently fixed in the next app update.
