A person has died in a serious crash north of Dunedin.
Emergency services were called to the collision involving two cars and a fallen tree just after midday, on State Highway 1 near Seacliff.
Snr Sgt Nik Leigh told Newshub a branch from the tree had fallen down causing a vehicle to lose control.
SH1 near the scene is expected to remain closed for some time.
"Motorists are advised that there are temporary speed restrictions in place in the surrounding area," a police statement said.
"Please continue to avoid the area if possible."
