Plimmerton residents brace for more rain after heavy flooding submerges suburb

Residents in the seaside suburb of Plimmerton are bracing for more rain after huge flooding submerged parts of the city.

Sunday's torrential downpour left 15 houses uninhabitable, affected around 50 and closed State Highway 1 for about two hours.

Plimmerton locals are in recovery mode on Monday - using wheelbarrows to clear layers of mud left behind.

A digger was brought in to do the heavy lifting on Cluny Road, one of the worst-hit areas.

Further up the street, cars remained submerged.

Martin Sammut's house has been left uninhabitable for the second night in a row.

"It's quite overwhelming. I've never been through anything like this before," he told Newshub.

"We've had to rip up all the carpets, the water has been through here."

"If it is going to flood you just have to sit there and watch it come in again."

Porirua locals are calling for infrastructure upgrades so this doesn't keep happening.

"This is the third or fourth storm in as many years the park does tend to be a catchment," Peter Barton said.

"Clearly we have a flooding problem."

But Porirua's mayor Anita Baker says she can't commit to solving those problems right away.

"We do need more money spent on infrastructure but we don't have the money," she said.

Plimmerton Chief Fire Officer Carl Mills says residents should prepare for a second night of flooding.

"If you were in a low-lying area and affected, be prepared for some water to come back."

With a heavy rain forecast tonight, firefighters are ready to respond again.
