A top police officer says a violent attack on a South Island school was prevented because people took their concerns to authorities.

The New Zealand Herald and Stuff report that a teenage student planned to carry out an attack at a Tasman area school, but it was uncovered before it was carried out.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Johnson said the complaints from the public were taken extremely seriously, which led to an investigation.

Police then made an arrest and defused any threat to the community.

Johnson said the incident highlighted how important it was for parents and caregivers to keep a close eye on what young people were doing online.
