A search is underway on Papamoa Beach for a missing surfer who has not been seen since Saturday night.

Tauranga Police are appealing for any information about the man, who was last spotted by a member of the public at around 8pm.

In a statement to Newshub, local authorities said the civilian, concerned for the surfer's safety, called police after seeing the man was some distance offshore.

The man entered the water near the Top Ten Holiday Park in Papamoa at about 5pm.

The Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club, two Coastguard vessels and two helicopters searched the area until midnight with no sighting of the surfer, said the statement. A shoreline search will continue at first light on Sunday.

Police are seeking information from anyone who saw the surfer or knows who he is, in case the man made it safely back to shore.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 105, quoting file number P044412098.
