The shocking moment a car is hit side-on by a truck near Christchurch on Thursday morning has been caught on camera.

Footage from the incident posted on the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page shows a blue car attempting a U-turn on Main South Road, Rolleston, just past the Rolly Inn.

However, the car fails to see the truck speeding along at 75km/h due to the rainy conditions.

The truck fails to stop in time and hits the car side-on.

A spokesperson for police said the car's driver sustained injuries and was transported to hospital.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

The video has been viewed over 1000 times, but commenters are divided as to who is in the wrong.

"That trucker is 100 percent in the wrong for not clearing his windscreen. I couldn't see anything until it was too late," one person said of the truck.

"Windscreen wipers would be handy to see that little car," another agreed.

But others thought the car's driver was at fault for not checking there were no vehicles coming before they pulled out onto the road.

"They weren't looking out for anything let alone a truck. The one thing they should have seen had they bothered," one commenter wrote.

"One thing for sure, that little blue car driver will certainly know they need to look next time," another said.
