Youth charged, appears in court after Wellington High School lockdown

A youth has been charged and appeared in court after an incident that forced Wellington High School into lockdown.

Police descended on the high school on Thursday morning after receiving reports of a threat on social media.

It was the second and more concrete of two reports this week, after a student on Monday came forward with worries about a shooter - but couldn't provide any evidence.

"[The officer] said there was a credible, serious, imminent threat to the school and we needed to take immediate action," Wellington High School principal Dominic Killalea told Newshub.

After the incident, police said they were talking to two young people in connection with the threat.

Now a spokesperson has confirmed a youth was charged in relation to the incident and they appeared in the Youth Court on Thursday afternoon.

Another youth will be referred to Youth Aid, which works with schools to prevent reoffending and revictimisation of children and young people.

"Police would again like to thank the community for their assistance while the incident was dealt with, and for getting in touch with information," the spokesperson said.

"We continue to ask that anyone who has information which can assist this investigation contact us on 105, quoting file number 201126/3921.

"As this matter is now before the Court Police is unable to provide further detail."
