Auckland's filthiest restaurants and food outlets have been revealed in a shocking list of dirt and infestations.

Two restaurants received E grades and 24 received D grades from Auckland Council between September 1 and November 23 for failing to have their outlets up-to-scratch.

Western Noodle in Mt Albert received an E rating during its September 10 inspection for poor cleaning, a rodent infestation, cross-contamination risks, poor food storage, and inadequate maintenance and food labelling.

During a follow-up inspection the next day, it still failed but was upgraded to a D rating. It is now, however, an A-grade outlet.

Dumpling Ace in Northcote was the second restaurant to receive the dreaded E grade. Its "dirty and unhygienic" premises, a cockroach infestation, cross-contamination risks, poor food storage, and inadequate maintenance were the reasons it was graded E on September 22.

Two days later, it was reinspected and graded D, however, it is also now an A-grade restaurant.

Photos supplied to Newshub show one food outlet with a filthy floor with layers of food splatters that have gone mouldy and another with what appears to be rodent droppings scattered across the ground. There is also a heavily-used cutting board that has been left uncleaned.

A spokesperson for Auckland Council told Newshub last year E grades are issued to businesses with critical food safety risks.

"When a critical risk to food safety is found, the business will immediately close and will reopen when the critical food safety risk has been addressed.

"For example, if a food business is found to have an extensive cockroach infestation, it will not be permitted to reopen, unless the cockroach infestation has been satisfactorily mitigated."

D grades are given when a business needs to improve but it isn't a critical risk.

"A D grade means that faults that are not a critical risk to food safety were found on the premises and intervention by a food safety officer was required."
