Busy roads expected as New Year's travel begins

Motorists are being warned to expect heavy traffic as Kiwis travel across the country to their New Year's celebrations.

Those leaving Auckland and heading south on State Highway 1 on Sunday are facing big delays, with video showing a slow commute for travellers.

Heavy traffic is expected between Puhoi and Wellford, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) expecting the busiest period to be between 11am and 1pm.

Northbound traffic between Puhoi and Wellford on SH1 will be heaviest between 10:30am and 6pm on Sunday.

Southbound traffic between Manukau and Bombay is predicted to be busiest from 9:30am for most of the day.

Traffic is also slow in Wellington, where congestion was expected in both north and southbound sections of SH1 between Peka Peka and Ōtaki on Sunday.

NZTA has warned motorists to expect delays until December 30, advising people to allow extra time for their journey.
