Coronavirus: Six new cases of COVID-19 detected at New Zealand's border

Six new cases of coronavirus have been detected in New Zealand's managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities, the Ministry of Health says.

However for the 20th day in a row, there are no new community COVID-19 cases.

In one of its final daily COVID-19 updates, the Ministry of Health also revealed every person placed in MIQ facilities due to links to the November quarantine cluster have recovered and been released.

Of the new cases, three arrived in the country on December 3 and returned positive results following tests on about the third day of their stay. One flew in from the UAE via Australia, another from Hungary via Germany and Qatar and the third from the UK via Singapore.

Another two - one from Sweden via Qatar and Australia, and another from the UK via Qatar and Australia - tested positive on around day five of their MIQ stay after arriving on December 1, while the final case arrived from Turkey via Egypt and the UAE on December 5.

All six new cases have been transferred to the Jet Park Hotel, Auckland's quarantine facility, after testing positive.

Another eight previously reported cases have recovered in the last day, so the number of active cases drops to 54. The tally of confirmed and probable cases detected in New Zealand increases to 2085.

On Monday, laboratories processed another 2894 tests for COVID-19, taking the total number of tests completed to date to 1,315,201.

Pakistan cricket team return negative COVID-19 results

The Pakistan cricket team in New Zealand for a series of international matches against the Blackcaps over the next few weeks have all tested negative for COVID-19.

All 52 members of the squad in MIQ facilities in Christchurch returned negative results on day 12 of their stay, the Ministry of Health says, and will be released on Tuesday.

The ministry says after "extensive testing" and completion of their MIQ stay, the Canterbury DHB medical officer of health is satisfied the team poses "a very low risk to the community".

"One case will remain in the Christchurch quarantine facility until fully recovered," the ministry says.

"One person repeatedly tested negative and is being released from the Auckland quarantine facility today, where they had been transferred on arrival as a precaution."

Testing of the Pakistan cricket team over the last fortnight revealed there were six acute cases of COVID-19 - all now recovered except for the one in quarantine - and four historical cases.
