COVID-19: 11 new cases detected in managed isolation

Eleven new cases of COVID-19 have been detected at New Zealand's border since Tuesday.

The new coronavirus cases are all in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities, the Ministry of Health said in a press release on Thursday.

There are no new cases in the community.

Another five previously reported cases of COVID-19 have recovered, bringing New Zealand's total active infections to 55. The country's total number of confirmed cases is 1806.

Over the summer holiday break, the Ministry of Health is only giving periodic updates on the COVID-19 cases with the next update sceduled for Sunday, January 3, then Tuesday January 5, Thursday January 7, and Sunday January 10.

Thursday's news cases:

  • One is a historical case who arrived in New Zealand from Canada via the US on December 24. They are currently in a Christchurch quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from the United States on December 24 and are currently in a Christchurch quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from India via the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia on December 26  and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from South Africa via the United Arab Emirates on December 26 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from the Netherlands via the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia on December 26 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • Three cases arrived from the United Kingdom via the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia on December 27 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from India via the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia on December 27 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • One case arrived on December 27 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility
  • One case arrived from the United Kingdom via Qatar and Australia on December 29 and are currently in an Auckland quarantine facility.

To date New Zealand laboratories have processed 1,405,854 COVID-19 tests, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the ministry added NZ's COVID Tracer App has 2,425,100 registered users and poster scans have reached 146,221,271.

"Over the summer holiday break, the ministry is reminding all New Zealanders to keep each other safe and use the COVID Tracer app to scan QR codes and turn on Bluetooth functionality," a spokesperson said.

"This will allow you to receive an alert if you have been near another app user who tests positive for COVID-19."
