Cyclone Yasa smashes Fiji, swipes Tonga, could open up NZ to more tropical weather

Fresh from smashing through Fiji, Cyclone Yasa is now swiping Tonga.

More than 93,000 Fijians have been affected and 24,000 Fijians have been forced into evacuation centres after the category 5 storm swept through with wind speeds up to 345km/h.

A 45-year-old man and a three-month-old baby are confirmed dead and Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama warns he expects fatalities to rise.

Tonga is next to feel its impact with storm passing to the west on Saturday.

Despite being downgraded to a category 2, WeatherWatch warns it's "still a powerful storm packing a punch".

"The capital Nuku'alofa has rain with heavy falls and thunderstorms today along with strong winds, up to gale force at times," it says.

"But the centre of Yasa should remain just enough to the west to spare Tonga from much more serious damage."

Is New Zealand next?

WeatherWatch says it looks pretty clear Yasa will be "torn apart" and it "does not expect any 'storm' reaching New Zealand".

"However Yasa does have the possibility to punch through the atmosphere and open up a corridor of more tropical weather into the New Zealand area," it says.

"Latest modelling today shows this could happen - but it may easily happen just a short way offshore and entirely miss New Zealand.

"We'll have much more details on Monday - including locking in that Christmas Day forecast with a bit more certainty."
