A range of ham products have been recalled over fears they may contain listeria.

The ham in question was sold at some New World, Pak'nSave and Four Square supermarkets in the South Island, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) said on Monday.

Pestell's Champagne Ham, Pestell's Cooked Ham on the bone, Pestell’s Boneless Ham, Pestell’s Boneless Ham pieces, and Pestell's Sliced Ham Off the Bone have all been affected, as well as ham sold over-the-counter at supermarket delicatessens.

"Listeriosis infection can be serious among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems and elderly people," said New Zealand Food Safety national manager food compliance services Melinda Sando.

The bacteria - Listeria monocytogenes - can be killed by "cooking thoroughly", Sando said, meaning an internal temperature of at least 75C. For those not willing to risk it, customers can return the ham for a full refund.

The company Pestell's Rai Bacon initiated the recall after one of its customers detected the bacteria, MPI said.

"For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of two to three weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear," siad Sando.

"Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

"If you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice."

A full list including use-by dates which might help identify which products are potentially affected, is available on the MPI website. Alternatively, customers can phone Pestell's Rai Bacon on (03) 547 0116 for more information.
