Large scrub fire on Christchurch's Port Hills now contained

Another large scrub fire that broke out near Christchurch's Port Hills on Tuesday has been contained.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Galilee Lane in the Clifton area around 11:30am on Tuesday.

Sixteen houses around Revelation Drive, Bay View Road and Galilee Lane were evacuated as a precaution.

FENZ says around a dozen fire appliances attended the fire, along with ground crews and four helicopters.

"A number of road closures are still in place," FENZ says.

"An aerial (helicopters) attack is still taking place and we expect our crews to remain on site overnight."

The public is asked to stay away from the area.

One witness described the fire to Newshub earlier on Tuesday.

"It seems to be flaring up again and getting close to the houses at the top," they said.

Canterbury DHB's community and public health unit issued a public health warning that exposure to the smoke can worsen pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

"People affected by the smoke should close windows and doors, and reduce outdoor exercise," says Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton.

"Anyone experiencing health issues from the Port Hills fire should phone their usual general practice team in the first instance."

Remember to:

  • Keep your windows and doors shut
  • Switch your air conditioning to 'recirculate'
  • Air out your house when the smoke clears
  • Look out for children, older people, and others at risk
  • Keep pets inside with clean water and food. Keep pets' bedding inside if possible

The Canterbury Transport Operations Centre says Clifton Terrace at Main Rd has been closed and further closures in the area are expected.

"Road users are advised to follow the directions of emergency services in the area," it says.

Police confirm they are helping with traffic control around the area.

Canterbury will enter a restricted fire season from midnight tomorrow.
