Man charged with murder over fatal Wellsford shooting

A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder after a man was found fatally shot in Wellsford, Northland, over the weekend.

Zane Smith, 37, was found dead in a car on Wayby Station Road, south of Wellsford on 28 November.

Police had been appealing for sightings of a 45-year-old man in relation to the homicide investigation, and found him unresponsive on Thursday at an Auckland property.

He was due to appear in the North Shore District Court this morning.

Police thanked the community for their help in reporting sightings.

A black 2005 Ford Falcon saloon - registration CTS862 - was being sought in relation to the incident. It was seen in Pakuranga on Sunday morning.

Police are also looking for the firearm used in this incident which is believed to be a rifle.
