Police have arrested a man after he was reportedly seen with a firearm at a service station in south Auckland.

Police were informed of the incident at around 3:54pm on Wednesday.

It was reported the man got into a vehicle and headed south on State Highway 1.

The vehicle was located and monitored by the Police Eagle helicopter and they were able to get a hold of the weapon after an armed traffic stop.

"All occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without incident," a police spokesperson said.

"Police have located a shotgun inside the vehicle and our enquiries are currently ongoing."

Motorists should expect some delays heading south as southern lanes were briefly closed near Bombay Hills during the armed traffic stop.

"We thank motorists in advance for their cooperation."
