New Zealand's most high-profile former prisoner and jailhouse lawyer Arthur Taylor has been recalled to prison on drug charges.

Police arrested Taylor at his Dunedin home on Saturday morning where he is serving time on parole.

According to the Otago Daily Times, he has been charged with several serious drug charges related to alleged offending that occurred earlier this year while he was living in Wellington.

Taylor told the Otago Daily Times the charges shocked him as his house had not been searched nor had he been found with any illicit substances.

"I was flabbergasted. I've bloody well been through some nonsense in the past, but this ... These are serious bloody charges," he said, adding he would be disputing the charges and would enter not guilty pleas.

Taylor was on parole from his sentence of 17-and-a-half years for conspiracy to supply methamphetamine, kidnapping, firearms, and explosives charges.

He was also recalled for a short time in June following eviction from his Wellington accommodation.

The 64-year-old has spent 40 years of his life in prison for over 150 convictions for offences including, robbery, fraud, and drugs.

He has become a well known 'jailhouse lawyer' after completing a number of successful court cases on behalf of himself and prisoners' rights - most notably prisoners' right to vote and changing the legality of the prison smoking ban.
