NZ Police dog shot in Northland arrives home for recovery

The New Zealand Police dog shot in Northland earlier this month has arrived home to continue recovering.

On December 1 in the township of Tangowahine, a German Shepherd was shot as police officers responded to a sighting of a "suspicious man". The man was also shot by officers.

The canine took a bullet to the head and was flown to a specialist vet hospital in Dargaville, where it required surgery.

In a Facebook post on Friday, police said they were "happy to report" that the injured dog had returned home to recover. Photos show the canine lying on a blanket, sitting outside on the grass and meeting people.

"We want to say a huge thank you to Dr Alistair Coomer and all the vet nurses at Veterinary Specialist Auckland, along with Dargaville vet Clinic and Kamo vets," the post said.

"Our dog is being well and truly spoiled by his handler and family. This will be our last update for a while as we leave them to recover but we will let you know if anything changes."

Police thanked the community for their "ongoing aroha and support".

On Thursday, it emerged that the 30-year-old man would "face charges of using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, injuring a police dog, unlawful possession of a pistol and unlawful possession of ammunition".

He also faces charges on unrelated matters.
