One person dead after fatal crash on SH1, Invercargill

One person is dead after a fatal crash on State Highway 1 in Invercargill, police have confirmed.

Emergency services found the vehicle in a ditch off the motorway - also known as the Bluff Highway - in the Woodend area near the Waimatua Creek Bridge at 10:25pm on Saturday night. 

Police said the person died at the scene. 

SH1 will be closed on Sunday morning as the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene of the crash. 

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area, we thank motorists in advance for their patience," police said in a statement.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
